General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Configure monitor for specific time period

It would be great if we can configure monitoring for certain time period. Example for Service Monitoring - We would like to generate an alert for service when it down in business hours between 8:00 AM to 6:00PM. Same thing with CPU, Memory, Event based and Performance counter monitors. I do not see we can create or stop monitoring for specific time period in SCOM 2012 R2.

  2. Increase the Number of SDK/Console Connections to Operations Manger

Currently 50 SDK connections is the Max you can have to a Management Group. This limits certain larger customers to have to have multiple MGs in order to satisfy the number of console connections via Web Console, Thick Console or SharePoint Webparts. For instance, I have a customer that needs to have 3 Management Groups to allow all the SysAdmins console connection capabilities (Roughly 120 Console Connections). It becomes a SCOM admin nightmare to try and manage 3 MGs.

  3. Update the 2007 Authoring Console tool

The 2007 MP Authoring Console for SCOM 2008 R2 was a very easy to use GUI driven tool. I know I can use MP Author, Visual Studio, etc...but this tool was SO much more intuitive and easier for MP authoring and editing. We need a 2012/2016 version to work with the new MP schema of 2012 MPs.

  4. Update SCOM like SCCM

use a tab like SCCM to select and self install and update scom by itself .

the tab should list each UR or version new features

  5. Maintenance Mode Exit Health status not a New state change

When SCOM enters maintenance mode and then exits it will re-examine the health of objects and re-discover issues that have already been raised previously - causing more alerts. It should check previous state before maintenance and not re-alert for something that has not changed. Alternatively if the state of alert is changed to something like "Acknowledged" then it should not keep alerting or appearing as a "New" state change.

  6. Bring the Operational Insights reporting capabilities to on-prem SCOM

The reporting capabilties in the Operational Insights / OMS looks awesome!
Unfortulately, lots of SCOM setups cannot for several regulatory reasons not be connected to the Operational Insights / OMS.
Please bring the equivalent experience to the on-prem SCOM solutions as well.

  7. Enable FIPS complaince in libraries for Linux Agents

    Please see forum thread here:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/57f86c23-9eac-409c-8bbc-6ad550c524e5/unixlinux-universal-agent-and-fips-compliance?forum=operationsmanagerunixandlinux

Per the MSFT team member Steve Weber:

I can reproduce this in our lab and we do not currently support FIPS and there is no workaround without disabling FIPS on the system. If this is something you want supported with the SCOM UNIX/Linux agents, please open a ticket with Microsoft support and have them create a 'Design Change Request' [DCR] so that it gets escalated and pushed back to our team.

I will also pass this post on to our management so they have reference but the DCR will be your quickest results.

  8. Discover multiple forests without trusts and properly show them in a diagram

The AD MP still doesn't seem to understand that many organisations have multiple forests, without trusts. If only for DTAP best practices. I would like a topology view, and health rollups, for each forest along with the trusts between them.

under review  ·  SCOM PMs responded

Thanks for your feedback. We are now reviewing your feedback and ranking it against the backlog of other requests we have for the ADDS MP. We will update the status of this feedback when we make a decision.

  9. Prevent Management Servers to be put into Maintenance Mode

Make a bool setting on each Management Server object to check mark, that this MS cannot be accidentally put into Maintenenance Mode. This would avoid a lot of Problems for customers who put servers into Maintenance Mode.

  10. Multi Tenancy

Better Multi Tenancy support. As an hoster with both datacenter and on-premise customers we need better support for customers integration and general setup in the console.

  11. improve network monitoring

Monitoring network has several issues that need to be addressed.

    - very unclear how it works (the discovery is 1 big black box. it's not "open" like system monitoring) and what it captures is not understandable for network admins (e.g. a switch has mem-1, mem-5 and mem-6 found by scom, but this is not understood by a network admin who only sees memory and not this division).

    - key property is mac address which keeps popping up in several views instead of a understandable name (the default performance views don't even have the option to show the mibII name/dnsname).

    -…

  12. Enable activedirectory group usage in scom

The group functonality is not good. You should be able to use active directory groups to target MP:s/views and so on.

  13. Email Alert delivery tracking and auditing.

I often have users who claim that they "never received the SCOM alert". There should be a way in SCOM to track and audit generation and delivery of email alerts. The alert history tab should have info on which email alert subscriptions were triggered.

Email templates should have a way to embed which alert subscriptions were used to generate them.

You should be able to click on an agent-managed system and see what alert subscriptions and groups a system belongs to.....similar to how you can see what email distribution lists a person belongs to in Outlook/Exchange.

  14. Support for Powershell 3,4,5 script monitors

Powershell agent only executes Powershell 2.0 commands and does not have support for any other Powershell versions/commands. Add a support to create Powershell script monitor that supports commands from PS 3,4,5.

  15. Native VMWare Management Pack

While hardware vendors like Dell, HP, and IBM provide free management packs for SCOM, VMware still requires the purchase of very expensive 3rd party management packs. If SCVMM can natively support VMware and SCORCH can have a native VMware oip, why can't there be a VMware MP?

  16. Correlation between SCCM Maintenance Windows and automated SCOM Maintenance Mode. So patching weekends can go by alert free.

  17. Group Population using PowerShell.

PowerShell Cmdlet to populate "Explicit Membership" groups. Should accept pipeline input or as string. Option to specify class. Here is an Example: Get-SCOMGroup _Displayname *Windows|Get-SCOMClassInstance | Add-SCOMGroup -GroupName 'Custom Windows Computers'

    Another Example $list = Get-Content 'C:\servers.txt'
    $list |Add-scomgroup -ClassDisplayName 'Windows Computer'

  18. Simplify maintenance mode

It is hard to put a machine with dependicies in maintenance mode.
For example in cluster you have to put the machine in maintenance mode, the cluster, some services on the other machines in the cluster.
If that could be simplifyed it would be good.
Like: maintenance mode for machine and dependencies.

  19. Datawarehouse Groom Setttings

I can change the SCOM operational database grooming settings from within the SCOM console. If I wanted to change SCOM Datawarehouse grooming settings, I have to download the dwdatarp utility from a blog post, get access to the DB and then set the groom settings. This is a request to add Datawarehouse groom settings to the Administration pane.

  20. Better Network Monitoring including Netflow

Currently Network Monitoring is pretty basic and if you want something decent you have to pay for a third party solution
