General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. iPhone, Android or Windows Phone App

A mobile phone and tablet app that an on-call operator can use to receive notifications on and see meaningful information for those objects they have Scope to view is missing.

Within the app, the operator should be able to acknowledge, close or escalate an alert, drill-down into the Health Explorer and see views, dashboards similar to what they have been scoped to have access to from their User Role membership and Subscriptions.

  2. Read-Only Administrator Role

There should be a Read-Only Administrator Role that allows the viewing of all the useful views and dashboards in the SCOM Admin pane, but without the ability to perform actions such as run tasks etc.

Our scenario is that we have regulators that say because tasks can be performed against a server (and so someone could, if they want, maliciously run code through SCOM to do something bad to a server), we have to record these sessions and have the accounts managed via tools such as CyberArk.

The issue here is that all of the roles from SCOM Administrator down…

  3. Looking for an MP to Monitor Windows Based Containers

Looking for MP to monitor windows based containers, with out having to deploy anything into the container itself. i.e monitoring the docker process itself.

  4. Windows Certificate Monitoring in SCOM.

    Hi Team,

I believe now a days its very common to use Certificates for secure communication including SCOM.

Its surprising we don't have any Mgmt Pack to monitor the same. However, we have third party mgmt. pack already but none is certified yet. I believe there should be certified Mgmt Pack.

    Third Party:

  5. Allow to install the Operations Manager DB in a SQL cluster instance with mount point

    1. Installing a SQL cluster with mount points is supported https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/819546
    2. Operations Manager supports hosting the DB in a Failover Cluster configuration https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249696.aspx

You can use SQL Server failover clustering or SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn

    3. Mount Point configuration is considered a Failover Configuration Instance FCI

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sql_pfe_blog/2013/07/30/adding-mount-points-to-a-wsfc-sql-cluster-fci-instance/
    4. The installation of the Operations Manager database cannot be completed because it is unable to detect disk space available where the data files are located in the SQL instance FCI with mount points https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2702933

System Center 2012 Operations Manager setup cannot determine the free disk space for the operational database…

  6. Ability to duplicate a subscription

Today, there is no way to duplicate a subscription from within the SCOM console.

This is a pain, because the wizard for creating a subscription in SCOM is very, very verbose with numerous pages. So when I have to create multiple subscriptions which only differ from each other slightly, I want to smash my face into the nearest blunt object.

This would be one of those quick fix solutions which would reduce the pain involved in using SCOM.

  7. Should be able to put monitors/Rules in maintenance mode.

Would like to see the option to put monitors/Rules in maintenance mode for group of servers instead of having servers/objects in maintenance mode.

For example, I just want to put " IIS availability monitor" in to maintenance mode for group of servers, so that I don't need to worry about keeping servers/object in to maintenance mode, as I want to monitor server but just on IIS.

  8. Gateway Server should ping Agents

Agents managed by a Gateway Server should be pinged by that instead of a Management Server.

  9. Update WFAnalyzer.exe (MP Simulator) in Visual Studio Authoring Extensions to support Unix/Linux Simulation

We are currently developing very comprehensive monitoring solutions for Unix / Linux environments in our company. But we have no way to check monitoring workflows for Unix / Linux with the MP simulator. The idea behind this tool is very good, but it is unstable for Windows workflows and does not support authoring simulations for Unix / Linux. For this reason, we also often struggle with performance problems in our SCOM environment.

  10. make SCOM Faster!!!

SCOM can be extremely slow and is a constant issue for our users, like embarrassingly slow...Not sure what it will take to improve the console speed but here are some suggestions:
Configure the views to be efficient out of the box.
Disable by default whatever is taking so long to load.
    Re-design the database. More indexes.
Cache the views on the SCOM Console servers.
Make a better search function, so even if it is slow, users can quickly find what they are looking for.
Load pieces of the views at a time, like server name, then health state, then MM.…

  12. Web Test created in VS should run internally as well

Currently we could create web tests in Visual Studio and run them from agents in GSM, but it works only for public facing web sites. That would be awesome for internal use as well.

Microsoft would offer a new great feature to SCOM and would have the opportunity to sell more VS Ultimate Editions ;-)

    Thanks,
    Patrick

  13. A GUI based approach to create PowerShell rules and monitors

Within the GUI there is no easy way to create PowerShell script monitors and rules. Please add a GUI driven wizard to create those.

  14. Add PowerShell cmdlets to create views, rules and monitors in SCOM

Today, there is a measley three PowerShell cmdlets for making new items in SCOM. The only thing we can do with PowerShell is make a New ScomLocation (pretty useful, I will admit), and make a new Management Group connection, or a new resource pool.

That's it. There is very little useful scripting support for SCOM. If you take a look at ConfigMgr, there are more than 100 cmdlets for making new items! This needs to change.

My vote is to first create cmdlets to support making new rules, then new monitors, and finally new views.

    The syntax should be something…

  15. Auditing changes in SCOM

I have no way to know who made what changes in the SCOM environment. There are multiple admins and they change settings such as Install MPs/ Remove MPs/ Change Overrides/ Author new rules/ Change Admin settings/ Create new users/etc. There is never a way to know who did what.

This is a feature request to Audit all major changes to the SCOM environment.

under review  ·  SCOM PMs responded

Thanks for your suggestion and up-votes. This request is under review and we will keep this thread updated on developments about the integration.

Meanwhile, I have a question for everyone that requested this feature. Hypothetically speaking, “If” this feature will be available in SCOM console ONLY if you have the OMS addon, would you be willing to/able to use this feature? Do any of you have a limitation of not being able to use OMS along with your SCOM environment?

  17. Support for SNMP v3 Traps

Simple, says it on the tin, most network devices support SNMP v3 these days, it's more secure.

  18. Alert object should always contain source server FQDN

The alert object does not always contain the source FQDN of the generating server. This property should be able to get by PowerShell. This would help building connectors using PowerShell / SMA etc.

  19. Logical Chain of Components (Alert Storm Prevention)

We need an option to associate components to each other to prevent an alert storm created by a failure of a central component.
For example if a central router on a remote location fails we get alerts from each component monitored at the location even though its still available locally.

  20. ADFS - "MEX Endpoint Is Unreachable" Monitor update to support Secondary Servers

The monitor goes unhealthy on ADFS Secondary servers because the script is only designed to run on the Primary server. Either make the script support secondary servers or the monitor's Condition Detection module detect that it is running on a seconday server (as the information is gathered in the discovery phase). Personally, the script should be doing the checking everytime and not rely on the discovery as the information from the discovery could be outdated (haven't checked as yet how often the discovery for this info).
