General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Improved WMI query bulding functionality

When creating WMI-based performance rules & unit monitors, provide the "triangle" button in order to be able to specify any of the workflow's target properties (or hosted) when building the WMI query. Queries running agents hosting multiple instances of a targeted class (ex.: Logical Disk) will require that we filter the WMI query using the "WHERE" clause. For example:

    WHERE DeviceID = '$Target/Property[Type="MicrosoftWindowsLibrary!Microsoft.Windows.LogicalDevice"]/DeviceID$'

Note that the button is available when building Windows Performance-based workflows (Object & Instance fields).

    Thanks

  2. Improved "Change Scope" functionality

leave the "Clear All" button accessible at all times in the "Scope Management Pack Objects" dialog box.

I (and my clients) constantly find myself checking a bogus class in the "Scope Management Pack Objects" dialog box, just to be able to access the "Clear All" button, and proceed with my new class filtering selections.

  4. Maintenance Mode history

A simple view, just to see the last 10 times a machine was put in maintenance mode, for how long (start- and endtime, or starttime and duration), and by who.

  5. Web Application Transaction Monitoring record actions not working on IE 10

As I understand this the Record action only works with an early version of IE. If you are running Server 2012, and IE 10, the Record dialog box won't appear.

  7. Public module for SNMP tables discovery

Now for SNMP custom discovery we have to develop our own solutions. Like this one: http://qndsnmp.codeplex.com/
It would be very nice if PG can provide us with an out-of-box module for this. It could result in more community MPs for network devices. Obviously more network devices are covered by monitoring = more happy customers.

  8. Extended properties for classes to add custom attributes.

We would like to populate CMDB data in SCOM. There are ways to make this happen, but we would prefer to just have some blank values CF1-CF10 and a corresponding powershell cmdlet to do it.

  9. Management Pack differential reporting.

Many companies have change management policies that require that new monitoring rules or changes in updated MP's are documented and vetted. There should be a native way within SCOM to do a differential report to show all of the rules and monitors that have changed between versions of an MP.

  10. Enhance the web application transaction recorder to track mouse movements.

Currently when you configure a web application monitor you cannot simply use the macro recorder to record a sequence of actions using your mouse. Everything has to be hard-coded via URL strings. SCOM web application monitoring should be on par with other web application monitoring tools on the market that allow you to use a recorder to track mouse movement and make things like monitoring a web site via SSO easier.

  11. Ability to Make dashboards public and not require a login without relying on sharepoint.

This would be best paired with the HTML 5 web console request, as to requiring a plugin to see the dashboards can make impromptu presentations a pain.

But without having to define all users into a read only role, I want to be able to flag content as public and not require a login into the web console to view.

Dashboards get created for projects all the time, and need to have good flexibility on who sees the data.

  12. Discover Windows server as Network devices

A way to discover windows server as Network devices for setting up snmp configuration in scom 2012 without editing .asl file. This requirement is required for windows server hardware monitoring where for some of the hardware vendor will not provide the respective hardware mp's

  13. operations console advanced or expert view

Operations Console Advanced or Expert view
I would like to have an option to use the Operations Console in advanced or expert view. This view will allow the advanced operator to do things like being able to view the underlying SQL query that was used to generate the particular state view or alert view for example. Right-click view to show the SQL query. This will allow users to run custom queries against the database for building custom web views or to learn some of the techniques that were used to generate the views. I find it faster to query the…

  15. Standardize source and path across management packs

For drive space alerts, "source" is the drive, "path" is the computer. SCOM hearbeat alerts use "source" as the computer and "path" as the SCOM namespace path. SQL has "source" as the instance name, and "path" as the computer\instance name, and AD sets both to computer name. It would be good if these were standardized; for example, "source" could be the computer with the problem, and "path" may be the SCOM namespace path. Or perhaps a new field could be added for the computer name.

  16. Enable distributed database

It would be good if, in a distributed management server setup, we could distribute database servers as well, so there's a local database for each management server.

  17. Subscription & alert integration + better formatted email support.

    1. Method to view a history of triggered subscriptions, email, command channel or otherwise.

    2. Include some data about a triggered subscription into the alert that triggered it.

    3. more options to create better formatted email based subscriptions, and include monitor product knowledge etc.

  18. Automatic agent remediation when servers grey out

Automatic agent remediation when servers grey out. This one's a no-brainer. If the server's accessible by remote share then the agent is probably reparable.

  19. Include a parameter for Persistence (number of polling intervals) in all monitors, especially service and disk monitors.

This is to stop alerting on transitory events, such as restarts or pauses of services, and files written then deleted from drives.

  20. Allow for management servers be excluded from All Management Servers resource pool without breaking automatic membership for new servers.

For proxies that use Management Servers as their base (Veeam Collectors), removing them from the all management servers resource pool breaks automatic membership for new management servers. It would be nice to have a way to mark management servers somehow to NOT be included in the all management servers resource pool, perhaps by an attribute, so that new servers will still be included in that resource pool.
