General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Real time monitoring for troubleshooting purposes

Sometimes need to get the same monitoring data trata comes from MP but in real time as perfmon gets. A troubleshooting tool or add- in that get the same data in real time for a short time.

  3. Connect the HealthService watcher connectivity status to WindowsComputer

The HealthService watcher is what one would look at to see when a particular server becomes non-responsive.
For lots of admins this is crucial, but the most apparent way to bring them info on their server(s) is to add the WindowsComputer to a view/subscription.

To make the scenario complete the WindowsComputer should have a monitor that is connected to the HealthService that informs that it is unavailable as well as a rule that informs when it has been restarted or experienced a DirtyShutdown.

  4. Bring the Operational Insights reporting capabilities to on-prem SCOM

The reporting capabilties in the Operational Insights / OMS looks awesome!
Unfortulately, lots of SCOM setups cannot for several regulatory reasons not be connected to the Operational Insights / OMS.
Please bring the equivalent experience to the on-prem SCOM solutions as well.

  5. A GUI based approach to create PowerShell rules and monitors

Within the GUI there is no easy way to create PowerShell script monitors and rules. Please add a GUI driven wizard to create those.

  6. Simplify maintenance mode

It is hard to put a machine with dependicies in maintenance mode.
For example in cluster you have to put the machine in maintenance mode, the cluster, some services on the other machines in the cluster.
If that could be simplifyed it would be good.
Like: maintenance mode for machine and dependencies.

  8. Enable activedirectory group usage in scom

The group functonality is not good. You should be able to use active directory groups to target MP:s/views and so on.

  9. Display MP where SCOM Group is stored

There is no easy way to figure out where the SCOM Group is located. A column in the GUI Authoring/Groups with the MP Name where the SCOM Group is stored.

  10. Prevent Management Servers to be put into Maintenance Mode

Make a bool setting on each Management Server object to check mark, that this MS cannot be accidentally put into Maintenenance Mode. This would avoid a lot of Problems for customers who put servers into Maintenance Mode.

  11. Update MP Simulator in Visual Studio Authoring Extensions to support *NIX Management Pack bundles

Please update VSAE to fully support *NIX Management Pack bundles. Current version seem to have issues with either MP Bundles or with *NIX MPs or both.

  12. SCOM Infrastructure performance troubleshooting

Please provide ETW providers that would make it easier for admins to understand why a monitoring service on a management server consumes more resources than others. It would be very helpful if there was a way to see which workflows are being executed, linking workflow details (like Object ID, Rule ID, etc.) with the Process ID and Thread ID that run that on a particular server. This information would be very helpful in chasing resource hungry workflows.

  13. SCOM Integrations

Please improve the experience for integrations to hook up to SCOM. Instead of hardcoding an integration against an individual Management Server (i.e. VMM, but others as well) please provide support for multi-host configuration, so that integrations could automatically switch from one node to another

  14. Standardize source and path across management packs

For drive space alerts, "source" is the drive, "path" is the computer. SCOM hearbeat alerts use "source" as the computer and "path" as the SCOM namespace path. SQL has "source" as the instance name, and "path" as the computer\instance name, and AD sets both to computer name. It would be good if these were standardized; for example, "source" could be the computer with the problem, and "path" may be the SCOM namespace path. Or perhaps a new field could be added for the computer name.

  15. Alert object should always contain source server FQDN

The alert object does not always contain the source FQDN of the generating server. This property should be able to get by PowerShell. This would help building connectors using PowerShell / SMA etc.

  16. Enable distributed database

It would be good if, in a distributed management server setup, we could distribute database servers as well, so there's a local database for each management server.

  17. Explosing the Monitoring Class name and Monitoring Object ID on the console

On the current SCOM console, only the display name of the monitoring class is visible. Would be nice if the actual monitoring class name, and the monitoring object ID can be displayed in the console (i.e. in the state views). This would help MP developers and SCOM users looking up objects when writing MPs, dashboards and scripts.

  18. Auditing changes in SCOM

I have no way to know who made what changes in the SCOM environment. There are multiple admins and they change settings such as Install MPs/ Remove MPs/ Change Overrides/ Author new rules/ Change Admin settings/ Create new users/etc. There is never a way to know who did what.

This is a feature request to Audit all major changes to the SCOM environment.

  19. Datawarehouse Groom Setttings

I can change the SCOM operational database grooming settings from within the SCOM console. If I wanted to change SCOM Datawarehouse grooming settings, I have to download the dwdatarp utility from a blog post, get access to the DB and then set the groom settings. This is a request to add Datawarehouse groom settings to the Administration pane.

  20. License Key in SCOM setup

There is no way to enter the license key through SCOM setup even if I had the keys with me handy. The Installer installs SCOM always as an evaluation version. I will then have to remember to enter license key through a powershell script to upgrade from an evaluation version of Operations Manager to a licensed version. This request is to add a step in the Setup wizard to accept a license key.
