Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

  1. Automatic agent remediation when servers grey out

Automatic agent remediation when servers grey out. This one's a no-brainer. If the server's accessible by remote share then the agent is probably reparable.

  2. Design SCOM to allow MSPs to more easily monitor multi customer environments

MSPs like ourselves would like SCOM to be designed in a way which allows us to monitor multi customer environments from the one management group easily with little management overhead. Currently SCOM is very difficult to manage in this configuration and requires a lot of customizations around views and groups to separate out monitoring between customers.

Current version of SCOM does not seem be designed around multi customer configurations. We would like to see design go into SCOM which allows us to easily monitor multiple customers, on premise, cloud etc from the one SCOM infrastructure.

  3. SharePoint Management Pack: Multiple Farms including Cross-Farm Shared Services

The current SharePoint Management Pack does not recognize the context of a SharePoint Farm, or rather, it assumes that all SharePoint servers are part of the same farm. Most all organization will have multiple farms (at a minimum they will have pre-production and production farms if they are doing any sort development). Many large organizations have multiple farm to consolidate services and/or content. If configured to do so, these farms can share services such as Managed Metadata, Search, and User Profiles. Monitoring and maintaining the many services within a SharePoint farm, as well as farm-to-farm services, in Operations Manager should…

  4. Create a more granular approach to the SCOM Administrator role. The bulk of our standard Operators require the ability to manage agents.

Create a more granular approach to the SCOM Administrator role. For example, the bulk of our standard Operators require the ability reinstall/repair/deploy agents. To do this they must be an Administrator, thereby opening them up to a plethora of options they absolutely do not need.

  5. Better Network Monitoring including Netflow

Currently Network Monitoring is pretty basic and if you want something decent you have to pay for a third party solution

  7. Update MP references when last override to referenced MP is deleted

When an override MP is used, the references do not get updated after the last override to a certain reference has been deleted. This prevents the referenced MP from being deleted. To be able to remove the referenced MP you'll have to manually export/edit the override MP XML, import it back in, and then delete the referenced MP.

  8. Time and weekday based overrides

it would be great if a override can be set for a specific time range. for example: because of the backup each night between 2am and 3am the cpu utilization is higher then normal. Therefor I want to have a higher threshold set for this time. It would be even better if you also can set the weekday for such an override, for example only an Saturday and Sunday between 2 and 3am

  9. Parsing SNMP traps

Some good network devices has the feature of parsing the SNMP traps. SCOM is still missing it. Undiscovered devices (which are not generis or certified) need this parsing so that received SNMP data can be processed and presented the way we wanted.

  10. Schedule on overrides

Some times I (my customers) could use a feature like this.

Scenario - some rule or monitor cause and alert to be raised. The root cause is found and fix is planned. Now until the fix is implemented the Ops Team don't want to get more alerts, so they configure an override with an expiration data matching the planned change date.

admittedly, in many cases it would be best practice to change the resolution state to like "Open Incident" and let the repeat count increase and for the monitor let I be in what ever state until fixed, but that's…

  11. Server / Windows Computer Groups dynamic via Server Role

Be able to create, within the console, computer groups such as the IIS computer group based on Computer Role (such as IIS, SharePoint, Exchange etc.). In the console currently limited to instance group creation.

  12. Dynamic Groups for components within Distributed Application

Just that, because currently you have to export out the group criteria syntax for the dynamic group and then cut and paste to the Distributed Application XML. Fine if you know what you're doing, but not for most SCOM admins where SCOM is not the main part of their job. It also then means that the DA cannot be edited within the GUI after modification via XML.

  13. A powershell command for removing network devices so i can run it from Orchestrator

I have a work around to add network devices into SCOM using Orchestrator with a SharePoint list as the source and a SharePoint form as the interface.
I have no way of deleting the same devices from SCOM using Orchestrator.
I notice that for the network classes when i query them from powershell many of the values are read only and cannot be changed. i.e. i was hoping to change a network device to deleted so that a SCOM cleanup process would remove the device.
I have seen code used for service manager blogged somewhere and it illustrates how to…

  14. Web application monitor template to support ADFS authenticated sites

There are quite a lot difficulties to monitor the availability (or response time) of web sites which require you to logon and especially with some SSO solution. SCOM requires significant improvements on this application monitoring from end-user perspective to become to the same level as some competing solutions.

  15. Show instance name within performance view on mouse over event

If several workflows are enabled on a performance view it is hard to find the instance looking at a specific line. If the mouse is placed on a specific line the timestamp and sample are displayed, please include also the object and instance.

  16. Operator permissions to view configuration and thresholds

Operators are often asking for the effective threshold and configuration of a workflow at the moment a state change is happening or an alert is generated.

Giving the operators the permissions and an easy way to view the effective threshold and configuration would ease life and make there work a lot easier.

  17. Netflow / jflow / sflow integration

Operators and users of SCOM are asking for integration of information about the packet flow within the network. Think about information coming from netflow, jflow or sflow implementations on the network devices.

  18. Build Network Vicinity View based on all devices

Currently the Network Vicinity View is build inside the discovery rule, this leads to a scoped network vicinity because links between nodes in difference discovery rules aren't known.

To administer the network monitoring enviroment the discovery rules are split over several management servers. It would be nice if this doesn't impact the vicinity view.

An idea would be too build the vicinity view in a seperate discovery with the objects managed by a resource pool as boundry.

  19. Ability to script overrides in bulk

If you have strict controls around what is enabled in an MP it's very time consuming enabling rules/monitors that target multiple groups.
