General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Node properties should reflect currently effective data

Current design for node location property is to show the last known value. For example a device is added and has a location this location is shown. If the location field is made empty the property in SCOM is not updated. This behavior is a deviation from the normal behavior for object properties as they do reflect the current effecitve data. Please remove this deviation and always show the current effective value, if we want to know a historical value we do have a data warehouse and reporting capabilities.

  2. SCOM 1807 ability to monitor Service Manager 2019

We are unable to migrate to SCOM 2019, but had already migrated Service Manager and Orchestrator to 2019. Service Manager servers report OS health without issues; however, anything related to the Service Manager environment just shows as "Unknown" - since SCOM doesn't have the ability to monitor 2008 R2 servers, upgrade SCOM isn't necessarily an option for everyone.

  4. Release and maintain a 2019 version of the "System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Authoring Resource Kit"

Release and maintain a 2019 version of the "System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Authoring Resource Kit".

This tool is an absolute gem in training new people to SCOM, which also gives them a better understanding on how everything is pieced together and useful for design work...

  5. multiple schedules on maintenance schedules or a copy function

Currently you can only set 1 schedule for a maintenance schedules... it'll be good to have multiple like sql jobs, or ability to copy the same schedules and paste.

  8. Support for Windows Server 2019 agents on SCOM 1807

Please, provide support for Windows Server 2019 agents on SCOM 1807. I could bet it works fine, but haven't tested yet
I can't migrate to SCOM 2019, as I still have to monitor some 2008 agents (that will still take some time to migrate)

  9. REHL 8 Server Monitoring through SCOM 2016

We has been approached by our UNIX Team and they would like to know how soon we can on-boarding REHL8 Server for monitoring through SCOM 2016 UR5. we have invested time to find out relevant information over the internet, but could not find anything and that is the reason why we have raise case with Microsoft REG:119051521002564 for same.

  10. SCOM 2019 support for 2008 R2 Clients

We need support in SCOM 2019 for agents that are running Server 2008 R2. Almost a quarter of our servers are still 2008 R2, and this is a huge hang up for us in moving up. Since these are more legacy systems, most are also unable to be updated.

  11. Start-SCOMAgentMaintenanceMode should have -Force parameter

Agent -initiated maintenance mode https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/scom/manage-maintenance-mode-overview?view=sc-om-2019#enable-from-target-system-1 is great, however as of now it still forces an answer in the console prompt - preventing the use from automated scripts that run on target systems. Adding a -Force parameter that skips the "are you sure?" check would be very welcome and trivial to implement, without us having to reverse and simulate the behaviour to reach the same effect.

  13. Monitor named "Performance Data collection health" needs to be fine tuned in a way that it does not overload the SQL Server when enabled.

The default SCOM monitor named "Performance Data collection health" which is disabled by default, needs to be fine tuned in a way that it does not overload the SQL Server when enabled for 1000 + Agents. The way the SQL query is built it looks like running it against 1000+ Agents will cause performance issues on the SQL server.

The purpose to enable this monitor is to identify if Performance data is stopped collected / missing for specific Agents in last few hours.

Request the product group to review the request to see we can ship this by default enabled…

  15. UNIX/Linux Management Pack Updates via SCOM 2012 R2

We generally check the catalog regularly for updated Management Packs in SCOM 2012 R2. The catalog is currently showing what appear to be incorrect versions of the MPs for the customers still on 2012 R2:

It might be a good idea to correct this, since these versions will break UNIX/Linux monitoring in SCOM 2012 R2, at the very least agent deployment will be broken.

  16. Create role for application monitoring author that doesn't require SCOM admin

Currently it requires SCOM admin access to run Authoring console templates like Web Transaction Monitoring. In large enterprise environment, dev team should be able to create and modify web transaction monitors in the SCOM authoring space themselves without needing SCOM admin.

  17. Azure VMs' OS monitored by Azure (not Windows Server MP) but other discoveries work

When I bring Azure VMs into SCOM monitoring I can create alerts from perf monitoring occurring in Azure. Azure VMs are already monitored by Azure by default. SCOM OS monitors duplicate these such as CPU, memory, etc. Would be good idea to reduce duplicate monitoring to leverage Azure for OS monitors but sill allow SCOM MPs dependent on OS (such as IIS) to work. In other words, disable monitoring from the Windows Server MP but not Windows Server discovery.

  18. SCOM 2019: creating Web Console Widgets - I would like to specify groups of servers via a .csv text file but I cannot find an import functio

SCOM 2019: When creating Web Console Widgets - I would like to specify a group of servers via a .csv text file but I cannot find an import function - I seem to only be able to search for 1 server at a time. It seems an enterprise product would have a text file import button. Tks

  19. SCOM CI-connector keeps setting Logical Disks to Pending Delete

I can only assume the SCOM team is responsible for the SCOM CI-connector as well.

We're seeing a lot of disks being marked as "pending delete" from SCOM, and having them being set to Active again with the SCCM connector. In this case, the SCCM connector is correct. This poses problems since we use the disk size reported from SCCM to produce sizing reports and forecasts.

  20. Invalid ‘Data Access Service SPN Not Registered’ entries in the ‘Operations Manager’ event log

As per Kevin Holman’s article entitled ‘OpsMgr 2012: What should the SPN’s look like?’ (i.e. https://kevinholman.com/2011/08/08/opsmgr-2012-what-should-the-spns-look-like/), please correct the following erroneous event log entries that are logged when the SDK service is restarted (and configured with an AD account):

    Event Log: Operations Manager
    Event ID: 26371
    Event Source: OpsMgr SDK Service
    Event Level: Warning
    Event Description:
The System Center Data Access service failed to register an SPN. A domain admin needs to add MSOMSdkSvc/MS1 and MSOMSdkSvc/MS1.contoso.com to the servicePrincipalName of CN=MS1,CN=Computers,DC=contoso,DC=com

The events are still being logged, even in SCOM 2019.

    Thank you,
