General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. The VSAE template for alert rules should allow specification of alert suppression criteria.

Right now I use the template to create the rule, then cut and past from the mpx to another mpx, add the suppression criteria and then delete the template.

  2. Update MP Simulator in Visual Studio Authoring Extensions to support *NIX Management Pack bundles

Please update VSAE to fully support *NIX Management Pack bundles. Current version seem to have issues with either MP Bundles or with *NIX MPs or both.

  3. Easy way to create an override ("buddy") pack, named CORRECTLY, from within the "Override Properties" screen.

All too often I see sloppy unsealed/custom miscellaneous MPs named something like "contoso - Windows Server custom stuff" or "operations server team", and in that MP will be overrides for various workflows which are defined in various separate management packs thus creating numerous dependencies, which is the opposite of best/recommended practice for storing overrides. I suggest adding one or more of the following features:

    1) In the Override Properties window->Select destination management pack, upon clicking "New..." , auto-populate the Name: field with a properly spelled/titled MP name suggestion based upon the name of the base MP for the targeted workflow.…

  4. Improved WMI query bulding functionality

When creating WMI-based performance rules & unit monitors, provide the "triangle" button in order to be able to specify any of the workflow's target properties (or hosted) when building the WMI query. Queries running agents hosting multiple instances of a targeted class (ex.: Logical Disk) will require that we filter the WMI query using the "WHERE" clause. For example:

    WHERE DeviceID = '$Target/Property[Type="MicrosoftWindowsLibrary!Microsoft.Windows.LogicalDevice"]/DeviceID$'

Note that the button is available when building Windows Performance-based workflows (Object & Instance fields).

    Thanks

  5. Public module for SNMP tables discovery

Now for SNMP custom discovery we have to develop our own solutions. Like this one: http://qndsnmp.codeplex.com/
It would be very nice if PG can provide us with an out-of-box module for this. It could result in more community MPs for network devices. Obviously more network devices are covered by monitoring = more happy customers.

  6. Enhance the web application transaction recorder to track mouse movements.

Currently when you configure a web application monitor you cannot simply use the macro recorder to record a sequence of actions using your mouse. Everything has to be hard-coded via URL strings. SCOM web application monitoring should be on par with other web application monitoring tools on the market that allow you to use a recorder to track mouse movement and make things like monitoring a web site via SSO easier.

  7. operations console advanced or expert view

Operations Console Advanced or Expert view
I would like to have an option to use the Operations Console in advanced or expert view. This view will allow the advanced operator to do things like being able to view the underlying SQL query that was used to generate the particular state view or alert view for example. Right-click view to show the SQL query. This will allow users to run custom queries against the database for building custom web views or to learn some of the techniques that were used to generate the views. I find it faster to query the…

  10. Web Application Transaction monitoring via Global Service Monitor

At the moment it is only possible to do Web Application Availability monitoring with GSM. It would be very usefull if Web Application Transaction monitoring could also be done with GSM

  12. Dynamic container membership in Distributed Application

For now, any container in Distributed Application (DA) can contain explicit members only. It will be nice to have the same abilities on DA containers like groups have, dynamic membership for instance.
Yes, its possible in current version of OpsMgr, but not from GUI, with notepad XML authoring only

  13. To integrate an option in Authoring pane to create custom classes

There is no option to create classes in SCOM 2012 authoring pane. We have to use MP author or other third party tool or do a manual xml editing. It would be nice if we have a way to create custom classes in SCOM authoring pane it self.

  15. Dynamic Groups for components within Distributed Application

Just that, because currently you have to export out the group criteria syntax for the dynamic group and then cut and paste to the Distributed Application XML. Fine if you know what you're doing, but not for most SCOM admins where SCOM is not the main part of their job. It also then means that the DA cannot be edited within the GUI after modification via XML.

  16. TCP port checks show end point and port

You can't search for the TCP end point from within Authoring or Monitoring. So unless you put the end point in the description, you can't find it again without digging through the management pack xml.

  17. Website monitoring to handle user journeys better

Website monitoring can't handle password pages where the authentication is selected random characters. For example when a page wants characters 2, 5, and 9 from your password.

  18. Have a GUI to create Powershell Dashboards that show near realtime information

Have a simple GUI that allows non-Progammers to create useful dashboards that can be created for Plasma Walls and for Technical Staff who can quickly identify potential problems.

  20. Compare (all or part of) an Windows event description text of multiple events

Compare the event description text of multiple eventlog entries, within a certain period of time, in a bad-good scenario. Preferably with the use of wildcards, so that it is possible to compare parts of the event description text which is unknown in advance.
