General Operations Manager Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with SCOM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another SCOM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building SCOM. We have already added some of the feedback we received through the TAP program and the recent SCOM survey.

This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to SCOM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!!

If you have technical questions or need help with SCOM, please try visit our MSDN forums.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Delayed Azure monitoring

There is a large and immutable delay of Azure alerts until they visible to SCOM.

The documentation for the Microsoft Azure MP version 1.3.22.0 states on page 48 that “this information [the Azure event log] is checked according to certain periods of time (20-35 minutes)”. The Azure alert is logged in the Azure event log as soon as it is created, but SCOM cannot detect the condition until it has passed the black box of “20-35 minutes”.

This situation is quite unfortunate for us. We *need* to receive alerts from Azure immediately they are raised. It is something of a…

    • Include the "Universal Linux Monitoring" Management Pack with System Center 2016 Management Packs for UNIX and Linux

Currently the System Center 2016 Management Packs for UNIX and Linux do not include the actual universal monitoring MP (Microsoft.Linux.Universal.Monitoring) for Unix/Linux, and it must be obtained from the older 2012 MPs.

      • Update the Universal Linux Management Pack Guide (UniversalLinuxMPGuide.doc)

The "Universal Linux Management Pack Guide for System Center 2012 SP1 - Operations Manager" guide included with Linux Management Packs has not been updated since April of 2013, and does not reflect accurate information (e.g. does not include Oracle Linux 7 as supported). The guide should be reviewed and updated with any new version of the MPs.

          • Improve performance widget for dynamic content population

At the moment the performance widget only works with static GUIDs of what it should display. Please add support for dynamic scoping so one can add a class or group target by referencing the mpinstance of it.
This will make it easier to transport the dashboard between SCOM installations.

Adding support under ManagedEntityIds for a mpreferance targer:

            • WinRM and Workstation service in Windows Server 2016 stops when SCOM agent is installed

Deploying New HyperV hosts and not installing the SCOM agent everything is stable. But when I install SCOM agent on any host I see "Host not responding" in Virtual Machine Manager Console. This didn't happen prior to installing SCOM agent. In SCOM I get several errors, i.e. "WinRM not running" and "Workstation service" not running, as well as WMI is unhealthy. This happens on all server 2016 monitered.

Give admins the ability to extend the classes via the Console GUI. E.g. Add a customer attribute to the Windows Computer class. Have this item(s) available to alerts, group populator's etc. This would be particularly useful for multi-tenant SCOM platforms.

                  • AlwaysOn

Would love it if SCOM supported the Multi-subnet flag for AlwaysOn instances rather than having to use the workaround that is currently in place to get SCOM to work when its databases are moved to AlwaysOn Listeners.

                    • SQL MP 2016 and 2014

The change does not appear documented and provides the customer no advance warning that this change will be required.

                      The class definition for Microsoft.SQLServer.Database (<ClassType ID="Microsoft.SQLServer.Database" Accessibility="Public" Abstract="false" Base="System!System.Database" Hosted="true" Singleton="false" Extension="false">) shows that the base class for SQLServer.Database is System.Database. In the management packs that include, and precede, SQL Server 2012, the entry for the derived 20XX database classes (<ClassType ID="Microsoft.SQLServer.2012.Database" Accessibility="Public" Abstract="false" Base="SQL!Microsoft.SQLServer.Database" Hosted="true" Singleton="false" Extension="false" />) states that they are derived from the Microsoft.SQLServer.Database class. Moving onto the derived 2014 and 2016 database classes (<ClassType ID="Microsoft.SQLServer.2016.Database" Accessibility="Public" Abstract="false" Base="System!System.Database" Hosted="true" Singleton="false" Extension="false">), it is stated that they…

                          • Allow overrides for the health state conditions on a monitor

SCOM overrides only allow you to change the severity of an alert that is generated by a monitor.

I have the need to be able to also change the health state that the monitor goes into when it goes into an error state.

Example: I am running the SQL management pack which comes with the monitor, "Page Life Expectancy". This monitor generates alerts, and those alerts are of a Critical severity by default. Using overrides, I can change the alert severity to something lower if I'd like, such as warning or informational.

                              • Alert Tuning Wizard in SCOM 2016 needs a Path Column

When using the new alert tuning wizard in SCOM 2016 you often find that the alert source dialogue is utterly useless.
It only contains two columns, Source and Alert Count. The problem is that Source is often not enough to decide whether it's the right source or not.

For example, all alerts from database instances with default instance name are all listed as MSSQLSERVER, giving you a helpful dialog looking like this:
                                MSSQLSERVER 25
                                MSSQLSERVER 19
                                MSSQLSERVER 18
                                MSSQLSERVER 14
                                MSSQLSERVER 11
                                MSSQLSERVER 7
                                MSSQLSERVER 6
                                MSSQLSERVER 3

I have no idea what database instance I am tuning alerts on…

                                • Make it possible to supress alerts across different instances of the same rule workflow.

Make it possible to supress alerts across different instances of the same rule workflow.

This way it will be possible to i.e. supress alerts comming from the same rule running on different machines.

Today in case of a non-empty tag SuppressionValue:

                                  <Suppression>
                                  <SuppressionValue>value</SuppressionValue>
                                  </Suppression>

Suppression is based on the hash calculated from “value” + workflow ID

The workflow ID in the current supression algorithme is the work flow instance ID - I’d like it to be possible in some cases to use the workflow type/class ID for suppression instead.

The SCO MP in Version 7.2.12.0 have a Problem on Entity Health (Recovery Task).
If an object has a status "Warning" in the SCOM, a recovery task from the SCO MP is available under "Entity Health".

                                    The Recovery:

                                      • group by resolution state should display state name, not state id number

If you group events by Resolution State, only each Resolution State ID is displayed, rather than the Resolution State Name - so doing this is less useful.

I'd like to group by Resolution State to see a history of 'Resolved' events, rather than closing them all manually.

                                        • Add 'Perfmon Process Instance Name' attribute to the 'SQL DB Engine' class.

Add 'Perfmon Process Instance Name' attribute to the 'SQL DB Engine' class in order to satisfy a request to collect various Perfmon counters (ex.: % CPU Utilisation) from the 'Process' object associated with each SQL DB Engine process instance. Though the class includes the 'Performance Counter Object Name' attribute, this does not map to the DB Engine's 'Process Instance Name' (ex.: "sqlservr").
